EASILY ACCESSIBLE NATURE

Easily accessible nature along the roads around the island

These locations are usually a short walk from the roadside around the island.

Natural Mangrove Site

メヒルギ自生地 (mehirugi)

The only place on Yakushima that has mangrove trees is located at the mouth of Kurio River in the south of the island.  Due to the comparatively cool climate these mangroves are much smaller than those found on more southerly tropical islands.  This species is named candle mangrove due to their long, slender candle-like shape that hang from the branches.  These ‘candles’ are hypocotyl, meaning ‘below seed leaf’,  and are actually the new stems of germinating seedlings.  To find the mangroves you need to cross the river at Kurio and turn left.  Follow the narrow road a few hundred metres and you’ll come to the river mouth where the mangroves grow.

Seibu Forest Path

西部林道 (Seibu Rindoh)

This is the name given to the stretch of road that runs through the World Heritage Area of Yakushima in the west of the island.  The road is too narrow for the local bus  and with few cars using it, this is one of the best places to observe the local monkeys and deerWe ask visitors to stay in their vehicles when driving through the Seibu Rindo.  This is where many car accidents occur and stopping by the roadside often leads to congestion.

Please do not feed the monkeys or the deer, and keep your distance (more than 10 meters).  If they are fed then they stop eating their natural food and cause extensive damage to local agriculture.  Do not stare at the monkeys.

Visitors wishing to know all about the Yakushima macque should consider taking our highly recommended YES Island Tour as we go through the Seibu road and spend a lot of time watching and explaining the habits of the monkeys and deer.

Senpiro Waterfall

千尋の滝 (Senpiro no Taki)

The Senpiro Waterfall is a wonderful waterfall that deserves to be seen, which is why it’s such a popular destination and photo-stop for the coach tours.  The entrance to the waterfall is just off the main island road, to the right as you head to Onoaida (尾之間) from the north.  It’s clearly signposted and so you shouldn’t have problems finding it.  This would make a LONG walk if you are visiting Yakushima waterfalls on public transport.  There is a car park, gift shop and toilet near the waterfall.  From the car park it’s only a 1 minute walk to the viewing area.  If you are visiting Yakushima during a heavy rainfall or before / after a typhoon then Senpiro Waterfall is a must-see as it will be at its most awe-inspiring.

The Senpiro Waterfall is often included on the YES Yakushima Island Tour.

Torokki Waterfall

トローキの滝 (Toroki no Taki)

As if one waterfall wasn’t enough, the same body of water from Senpiro Waterfall then heads toward the ocean and just before it enters the sea it once again tumbles over a large waterfall called Torokki Waterfall. This is one of only two waterfall in Japan that fall directly into the sea. To get to Toroki Waterfall from Senpiro Waterfall, go back down to the main road and head north a little way and over the bridge until you come to ‘Pontankan’ (just across from the sign with the two ‘cute’ orange characters).  The Pontankan is a one-storey building which contains a large gift shop, an orange processing facility and nice toilets.  The waterfall is on the other side of the road by the cute sign and there is a lovely new path path until the last 15m when you have to walk across some rocks and roots. The walk only takes a few minutes to the viewing point. The viewing point for the waterfall is through quite a narrow gap in the trees and so if there are others wishing to see it then make way as soon as you’ve taken your photo.  There are also lovely views of the rocky lava-strewn coast and turquoise waters on the other side.

Ohko Waterfall

大川の滝 (Ohko no Taki)

Ohko Waterfall is listed as one Japan’s best 100 waterfalls – deservedly so with its magnificent 88m high spray.   The waterfall is situated between Kurio (栗生) and Nagata (永田) on the west coast of the island.  There’s a car park and a toilet just off the roadside.  The waterfall is well signposted.  There are a few local buses that go as far as Ohko no taki (Ohko Waterfall), but they are infrequent.  This is a very popular waterfall stop on the island coach tour circuit and it is worth the journey there to take a look.  You can get much closer to this waterfall than you can to the Senpiro Waterfall and in the summer heat the spray is deliciously cool.  Swimming in the pool is prohibited.

The Ohko Waterfall is often included on the YES Yakushima Island Tour.
