Fun Diving for Certified Diver
Overview
Marine ecosystems heavily influenced by the Kuroshio Current
The Kuroshio is a 200km wide ocean current that flows close by Yakushima. The current’s distinguishing features are its high temperature, high salinity, water clarity and it’s speed. The winter temperature of the current is an average 19.2C and this makes the winters on Yakushima considerably milder than mainland Kagoshima. The sea temperature in the summer can rise up to 28C.
The warm waters allow coral to flourish and the swift current brings a plethora of marine life including the sea turtles that nest on the island during the summer. There is certainly plenty to see under the water. Yakushima has also been confirmed in past nationwide ocean biodiversity surveys to be the place with the greatest variety of marine life in Japan.
Turtles, octopus, squid, sea snakes, a wide range of fish species and whole eco-systems of coral are what you should expect to observe while under the water.

Yakushima Diving Styles
The most common diving style in Yakushima is a guided boat dive in the Isso area.
Boats depart from Isso Fishing Port, and since the dive sites are only 3–5 minutes from the port, the boat returns to the harbor after each dive.
Surface intervals of 40–60 minutes are taken on land at the port.
The Isso area offers a variety of dive sites, and the day's diving locations are chosen based on the weather, sea conditions, and diver experience level.
Backroll entry from the boat.
Each dive site has permanent buoys and ropes for easy entry and descent.
Most sites have no strong currents, making them enjoyable for both beginners and experienced divers.

Flexible Diving Options
You can dive once or twice in the morning, with an optional third dive in the afternoon (maximum 3 dives per day).
Since the boat returns to the port after each dive, you can also choose to join only morning or afternoon dives.
Depending on your arrival time in Yakushima, you can start from the 2nd or 3rd dive.
If space allows, diving twice in the afternoon may also be possible.
After the dives, you can shower and change at our shop in Miyanoura, where we also complete logbook entries before checkout. (Miyanoura is about 15–20 minutes by car from Isso.)
If you don’t need to fill out a logbook or prefer to end your dive at the site, you can check out directly at Isso—just let us know in advance!
