ABOUT YES Yakushima
YES MISSION
Navigating the Path of Sustainable Tourism
We have the pleasure of living and working on Japan`s best example of a natural environment.
Yakushima is a wonderful model of how a society has successfully utilized their surrounding natural environment with a sustainable outcome. However, this lifestyle does not occur easily and both residents and visitors have a responsibility to see that this sustainability continues. Our mission is to encourage sustainable tourism both ecologically and economically.
During a YES tour visitors will learn about the ways our ancestors lived upon Yakushima and also how the current generation strive to minimize their impact on our island.
Should you only require accommodation or rental services then we discourage visitors from using the booking services of international agencies as they may seem attractive and convenient to use, but these agencies have an overall negative impact on our island economy.
We wish to encourage visitors to support the economy of the destination they visit and this is where YES can offer our services to assist in this sustainable endeavour.
YES SERVICES
YES Yakushima offer a range of Yakushima tours in English and a free booking service to help you arrange your accommodation, activities, rental vehicle and other requirements for your visit to our island.
YES Tours
The YES guides deliver professional, informative and fun tours that will make a difference to your visit to Yakushima.
We operate tours for individual guests, families, small groups and large cruise tours such as the Japan Botanica cruise tours with over 100 guests. We conduct successful tours with guests with very little hiking experience as well as guests with specific interests such as botanists, bryologists and mycologists!
Booking Services
YES aim to fully support our island and its economy and so by booking your hotel with YES instead of the usual international booking agents (who take their commission from the local hotel) then ALL of your booking fee enters our local economy.
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF YES
Who are YES Yakushima
The co-founder of YES – Steve (the other co-founder being Helen*) – moved to Yakushima in early 2011.
In 2012 Steve & Helen recognized the absence of any organization focused upon assisting the few international visitors to Yakushima. Indeed, many local organizations thought that we were wasting our time aiming the business at the international visitor. However, the early signs of the Japanese government promoting international tourism were evident and we pursued with our hunch that we were on the right track.
By 2016, YES were beginning to recruit a handful of local guides to operate Yakushima tours and the local hotels and other services were beginning to contact us to be added to our website.
YES now operate daily tours with a team of excellent and well-qualified local guides. We also operate the accommodation and rental side of our business handling almost 10,000 bookings a year.
* Helen left Yakushima in 2015 to set up her own operation in Kumamoto and we do recommend visitors to the Kyushu mainland to contact Helen at Explore Kumamoto.

EXCELLENT Based on 183 reviews kathleen f2024-10-22Verified A great introduction to a special island I'm very happy that I booked an island tour through Yes! Yakushima. Communication was clear and straightforward, and our guide, Miho, was excellent: a gentle, kind and delightful person. We saw monkeys! Deer! A beautiful beach! An amazing moss-covered forest! I would not have been able to do all this on my own unless I rented a car, which I had no interest in doing. We then had two more days on the island, during which we traveled around on our own by bus, but the initial overview helped it all make sense. Lori N2024-07-23Verified Just say YES! We stayed on Yakushima for one night and packed in a whole lot! I was exhausted! Steve helped us to arrange a tour for my elderly parents separate from a more challenging hike for me and my kids. Then I did the turtle tour that evening. We stayed in a 6 person cabin at Hagami no Sato. The hostess was so sweet! She even brought us to a market to pick up breakfast for the next day, on our way to dinner, then picked us up after dinner! And she brought our luggage to the lodging from the ferry and back to the ferry the next day! The next day the 6 of us took a tour around the island. We got to see a tea farm, waterfalls, monkeys, deer, and we got to swim in the ocean! Steve pretty much customized the day for us! And we made it just in time to board the ferry with all our luggage waiting right there. What a wonderful and memorable trip! Thank you Steve! Gyl M2024-06-30Verified Once in a lifetime experience, and a fantastic guide Absolutely fantastic. The forest and mountain views were amazing, and the weather was perfect. Hint.... it's a rainforest. It rained. But that was no problem at all. Just dress appropriately. We took two hikes on two consecutive days with our guide Takashi, who was fantastic. The hiking was 4-5 hours, not particular strenuous, but it can be if you want it to be. Takashi conveyed his love and respect for the forest and the mountain, and transmitted it to us. He looked after us wonderfully, we enjoyed the bento (and the Mosburger!) and set us up with one of the best yakiniku restaurants we've ever been to afterwards. Yes Yakushima is a class operation. They answer emails fast, are straightforward, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Christy2024-05-25Verified Beautiful Break We took two tours with Steve and they were both fabulous. Yakushima is a beautiful island- it looks a bit like Hawaii;) It’s a true nature break from mainland Japan. It’s a VERY small island, and the truly only way to see the island is to use a guide. There isn’t a real way for non- Japanese tourists to get around the island. Steve was so incredibly knowledgeable of the island and of history in general. It was such a pleasure spending 2 days with him. We did a half day island tour and a half day hike with Steve. He picked us up from our hotel each day- the SANKARA. Thank you Steve for allowing us to see the beauty of Yakushima. Ybblue952024-05-19Verified Excellent one stop service! I used Y.E.S. Yakushima to arrange my hotel, car rental, and boat reservation. They helped work all details directly with local businesses. Everything was quoted and met my expectations! Steve and I communicated via email several times until all details including time of arrival at hotel, car rental pickup and drop off times, and exact boat arrival and departure times. Since I do not speak much Japanese, clear communication in English was helpful. As a note, unlike services like Agoda Y.E.S. Yakushima works directly with local businesses so they get a fairly paid. Excellent services! Stacey S2024-05-17Verified The island tour and Shiratani Unsuikyo tour were wonderful. Steve and Koki are fun & knowledgeable. Great experience! YES Yakushima handled all of our arrangements on the island beautifully. The Yakusugi Miyanoura Minshuku was fabulous. The food was fresh, delicious, and plentiful. The hot baths were amazing after a long day of hiking. The island tour and Shiratani Unsuikyo tour were wonderful. Steve led our island tour and shared a wealth of information about the history, geography, wildlife, agriculture, and culture on Yakushima. Koki led us on the forest hike and was fun, very patient, and extremely knowledgeable about the forest. We left the island with a great appreciation for its unique environment and a vested interest in the long-term well-being of the island and its residents. What a great experience! suzyb29082024-05-17Verified The most wonderful experience and highly recommend this tour The most wonderful experience and highly recommend this tour. Koki was our guide and the hike through Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine was just magical. We took the Bugyosugi route to avoid the many other hikers and am so glad that Komi suggested this. A fantastic experience, not to be missed… loved it! EL P2024-05-04Verified A great booking service when you visit the beautiful Yakushima Island We used "Yes! Yakushima" to book our car hire when visiting Yakushima Island. This online site offers a lot of different booking services for visitors to this wonderful island. The response from the staff was prompt, clear and courteous. We had already made our own accommodation booking before find the "Yes! Yakushima" website but we know they an assist with this too. Everything about our car rental went so smoothly. The car rental staff met us at Miyanoura Port when we arrived on the ferry and were there right on time when we departed. Thank you for making this so easy. Much appreciated. Jacquinou2024-05-02Verified Unforgettable tour on Yakushima island with an outstanding guide. Our 5-hour tour of Yakushima with our guide Steve was one of the highlights of our three-week trip to Japan. He booked the ferry from Ibusuki for us and picked us up at Miyanoura port. We are grateful to him for having perfectly adapted the circuit to the abilities of the oldest among us (80 years old) and for having taken care of him so that everyone had great pleasure in discovering the fascinating biodiversity of Yakushima in complete safety and tranquility. Its large century-old trees, its ferns and its moss. But also to learn a lot about Japan and its way of life. We couldn't have dreamed of anything better. Thank you Steve, you fulfilled us. Madelynn K2024-01-20Verified 100% recommend! Yakushima will go down as one of my favorite spots I've ever visited, and Yes! Yakushima was an absolutely essential tool to make it that way! My accommodation (Guest House Manmaru) was booked through Yes! and was such a great experience, and having someone to help coordinate my car rental & ferry tickets to and from the island was so helpful. 12/10 recommend!
EXCELLENT Based on 66 reviews Linus Yuen2024-12-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Steve was a very accommodating, reactive, warm and overall excellent guide. As a long-time resident of the island, he handled my family with a wide range of both physical abilities and interests well. Overall, the value-add he brought to our trip was far beyond expectations — definitely a must for English-speaking tourists who are not familiar with the island. Grace Zhang2024-12-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am a solo traveler. I stayed 5 days in Yakushima. Steve helped me book car rental, lodging, and ferry. He was very quick to respond to emails and the whole process was very smooth from beginning to finish. Thank you very much for everything! Steve was professional getting us set up for two "full day" tours (6-7 hours). His website is full of interesting local information, and it was well worth the on the history and nature of Yakushima before traveling there. The pricing for accommodations seem out-of-date (the quote for the two properties I inquired about were rather far from the budget range listed on the website). I booked accommodations through this service mainly to support the local economy, but I admit I used mainstream travel sites to research many of the properties since the info on the YES website were somewhat limited. One main benefit to using YES is that at least one of the properties I asked about was most easily (only?) bookable through direct contact or local means - I ended up picking such one. He replied quickly the day before our tour when we asked about cash withdrawals. == Our first tour guide "K" was was clearly seasoned at tracking and gauging the best time for a hike on a heavy rainfall day (Nov) and was constantly monitoring a weather forecast map on his phone. We came prepared with rain gear+full change of clothing in prep for getting soaked, but he opted to take us to indoor activities during the heaviest portion of the rainfall so we did not end up using it. It was less exciting, but understandable. I had mentioned I would prefer to be outdoors despite the rain when the museum was suggested as an alternative. We did not get a partial refund/other compensation for having our tour changed due to the weather and spending several hours of our tour in a museum that we paid for out of pocket and a souvenir shop. The site might have mentioned this, but it was still a bit disappointing given the rest of the tour. -- His English was passing, and it seems he gave the bare minimum information when we went to sites as a result. He would give additional information only when asked. For instance, when we went to our first stop, a shrine, he did not explain why we did any of the gestures performed (hand washing, clapping, bowing) and we sort of followed suit expecting an explanation we never got. I did start proactively asking questions afterwards when I realized this would be the case for the rest of the tour. Car rides were mostly silent. I had tried to initiate conversation early on, but it was clear he did not really want to (could not?) keep the conversation going. It is possible this could be attributed to poor English, but it still made for a rather lacking experience for the price. I would not consider this experience to have been especially good value overall, to be honest, but what did stand out from the tour was a driftwood beach we otherwise would have missed. To guide's credit, he did give an option to take a longer hiking route which would have possibly made up for some lost time, but since the hike was largely silent between landmarks (which usually had a large board explaining the significance anyway), it did not seem a tour guide being there would have added much in way of value if you are familiar with hiking/reading at all. === Our second tour guide, Yukari, by contrast, spoke fluent English having spent a few years abroad. She was bubbling with enthusiasm and information and came well-prepared with a framed map showing where we will be going which she whipped out between destinations. Yukari was incredibly friendly and shared an plethora of local traditions and trivia absent from info boards on site and during drives. While she has been a guide for a relatively shorter while, you can clearly feel the passion as she shared her love for the island. She was not afraid to admit when she did not have the answer to every question I asked, but would instantly look it up to add to her arsenal of knowledge. She also took great photos - a very appreciated change of pace. Yukari was an incredible and entertaining guide and her positive and proactive energy taught us a lot about the lesser known aspects of life on Yakushima - definitely ask for her if she is available. Ben Mo2024-11-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I used YES to help book a rental car last year with fairly short notice, having already tried looking for car availability from different vendors. They were able to organise a suitable booking for us very quickly and made the experience stress-free. Alvaro C2024-11-27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Steve helped us organize our trip for it to be just what we wanted. The hike and island tour were beautiful. We saw places and learnt things we could not have without the guides. Thank you so much ! I will definitely book another tour with YES Yakushima the next time I travel to the island. Alexander L2024-11-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Local car rental companies do not speak English. Steve helped me organize a rental car and made sure the pickup and return times matched with the ferry timetable. I can really recommend his services! Costeroste Alain2024-11-04Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We wanted to thank you for the service provided by YES . We were very happy with the scuba diving shop. Very friendly and professional. The two places we stayed were absolutely great in term of confort and location. At hagami no Sato, the person in charge was super friendly and kind. At uchinai we did not have chance to meet her but she recommended by email the sea onsen under the stars and it was an amazing experience. For the car rental, we got good and quick support to find car repair shop, when we got one tyre deflated. Unfortunately this is not covered by insurance . As summary, we had great holidays and you contributed to it. Thank youVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
